A Preliminary Laboratory Evaluation of Artificial Aggregates from Alkali-Activated Basalt Powder

The widespread use of natural aggregates is one the main causes depletion resources, as are constituents several construction materials. Alternatively, it is, today, proven to be feasible mining tailings, either or recycled materials, produce artificial through specific processes. A possible way aggregate alkali activation powdered material in a process called geopolymerization. This study proposes basalt powder and two different metakaolins precursors for production an alkali-activated aggregate, with shape size achieved by using 3D-printed molds. experimental were evaluated traditional tests aggregates, such resistance compression, density abrasion fragmentation. Furthermore, was chemically analyzed order evaluate geopolymerization promoted adopted metakaolins. physical showed that do not perform well terms wear fragmentation, which can improved. However, they revealed promising results skid, polishing micro-texture.
